Curious About Intuitive Painting?

Oct 25, 2024

Intuitive painting is all about listening to your inner voice and allowing your emotions to guide your brush  (or if you are like me your fingers ha ha). There are no strict rules, no “right” or “wrong” way to create. It’s an exploration of colours, shapes, and especially feelings. Whether you've painted before or a complete beginner, my intuitive painting practice invites you to let go of self-judgment and embrace the joy of creation.

Why Try Intuitive Painting?

  1. Stress Relief: Painting is a fantastic way to unwind. The rhythmic movement of the brush can be super meditative, which helps you release stress and anxiety.

  2. Self-Discovery: As you paint, you’ll uncover hidden emotions and thoughts, making my process a powerful tool for self-exploration.

  3. Pure and Unadulterated Fun: Forget about expectations! This is your time to play with colours and shapes, allowing you to be completely spontaneous.

Want an Easy Way to Get Started?

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you jump into your own intuitive painting experience:

  1. Gather Your Supplies: Grab some paper or canvas, any paints you have (acrylics, watercolors, or even markers), brushes, mark making tools and your favorite music playlist.

  2. Create a Comfortable Space: Find a cozy spot where you can get messy. Lay down some newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect your surfaces.

  3. Set the Mood: Play music that inspires you—something upbeat or soothing, whatever feels right for your creative flow.

  4. Start Painting: Begin by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. Then, pick a colour that calls to you and make the first mark. Don’t think too much—just let your intuition guide your movements. Add layers, switch colors, change tools and embrace the unexpected!

  5. Let go of the Need for Your art to be Good: There is a good chance you will not like your artwork in the messy middle, or possibly even at the end. If you start with that possibility in mind then it won't won't be a big surprise if it happens.
  6. Embrace Your Creation: Once you feel complete, step back and admire your work. Remember, this is about the journey, not the destination. It's about the process not making a product.
